CommuniTEA Infusion Honored at the Alberta Legislature

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was first proclaimed on December 3, 1992 by the United Nations. Each year celebrations and conversations occur on that day surrounding the rights and well being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society. This year, the CommuniTEA Infusion team had the opportunity to contribute to this international conversation.

Meet and Greet with Minister Sabir, Minister of Community and Social Services

On December 4th, in recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the CommuniTEA Infusion team was invited to the Alberta Legislature for a visit with Minister Sabir, the Minister of Community and Social Services. The team was excited and proud to have their work for supporting the inclusion and engaged citizenship of persons with disabilities honored in the legislative assembly. In their meeting with Minister Sabir, the team shared their insights on some of the current challenges people with disabilities face today. Larry, a co-coordinator of the CommuniTEA Infusion Project, was a strong self-advocate, sharing his personal challenges securing safe, affordable, pet friendly housing and sustainable employment.  

CommuniTEA Infusion is one of Skills Society’s social change initiatives that’s been running for almost 10 years now. The project boasts a 1973 Volkswagen van wrapped in eye catching colors rigged up to serve sweet iced tea. Acting as a spark for social connection, the van, run by people with disabilities, builds community and breaks down social barriers amongst community members with and without disabilities.  Click here to learn more about the CommuniTEA Infusion Project.
